Introduction

            Florida Gateway College is a school located in Lake City, Florida. Florida Gateway College currently has a cafeteria on campus known as a the “Gateway Grill”. This cafeteria only has so many options on the menu and I believe that the school should open more options to the staff and students. The purpose of this report is to show why the President and Florida Gateway College Board Members should allow a new restaurant or a coffee house to be built on campus. Adding a restaurant or coffee shop on the Florida Gateway campus would; improve the attitude of the students and staff, offer a cheaper and more convenient option for students, and open an internship possibility for students.

Discussion: How will the restaurant/coffee house positively impact the school?

            Increasing the amount of healthy food that is offered on a school can have a positive impact in many ways including; satisfaction, nutrition, and behavior. Per the article on SFGate website, adding a health option on a school campus can create these positive things. A good restaurant and coffee house is Panera Bread. “Eating clean” is something Panera has recently picked up, meaning that they stopped serving processed food. Processed foods result in a loss of nutrients. Eating processed foods can starve the body of all the nutrients it needs, and it can cause major harm to your body. If Florida Gateway was to add a restaurant/coffee house and they picked a “clean” restaurant, like Panera Bread, then the whole student body and college staff could be affected positively.

            College students often eat at fast food restaurants because of two reasons; convenience and price. Per an article on the FASEB website, there was an online survey that consisted of 344 students. This survey was put together to see how often students eat at fast food restaurants. 84% of the 344 students ate fast-food and finished approximately 54% of the meal (http://www.fasebj.org/content/24/1_Supplement/940.4). This information can be used to show that adding a new restaurant or coffee house on campus could be very beneficial. They would not have to drive to a restaurant off campus, and they would not have to chance being late for their next class if they were to get caught in traffic.

            Opening a new restaurant or coffee shop on the campus at Florida Gateway could also open possible internships with the new company on campus. Per the “Best Choice Schools” article, if a student is looking for in the culinary arts then he/she should get a job in a kitchen restaurant. Workers in the restaurant can help provide students and workers with information on internships that may be open near your school. Florida Gateway would be able to not only provide this opportunity for students and help them grow, not only academically, but in their career as well.

Recommendation

            Building a new restaurant or coffee house on campus at Florida Gateway College could be very beneficial for the students and staff in many ways. If we were to add a fast and healthy restaurant to the campus, students and staff would literally be in a better mood. Eating clean helps you stay in a better mood and create a more pleasant environment for everyone. The students would be positively effect seeing as they tend to primarily eat fast food due to price and convenience. Fast food is a faster alternative than a sit-down restaurant and students tend to find that very convenient for their busy schedule. By putting the fast food restaurant on campus, it would be even more convenient. The possible restaurant could also bring big opportunities for the students on campus as well. This could even open a possible internship for a student looking to go into the culinary arts. I do understand that adding a restaurant or coffee shop at Florida Gateway is risky, but I believe that this possible restaurant or coffee house has many positive aspects as well. If Florida Gateway was to add a restaurant/coffee house and they picked a “clean” restaurant, like Panera Bread, then the whole student body and college staff could be affected positively.
